The Shan Hai Jing describes Fenghuang as chicken-shaped and patterned in five colors. This coloring design interprets those source motifs with a graceful crest, layered wings, long ornamental tail feathers, and a modern cloud-and-mountain setting.
Legend
In the Nanshan Jing, Fenghuang lives on Mount Danxue, where gold and jade are abundant and the Dan River flows south toward the Bohai Sea. The text says it feeds naturally, sings and dances by itself, and appears when all under heaven is at peace.
Symbolism
The text places the virtues de, yi, li, ren, and xin across Fenghuang's body: on its head, wings, back, breast, and belly. It can be read as a figure of harmony, ethical order, and auspicious peace.
