Origin
Hu Jiao is recorded in the Southern Mountains section of the Shan Hai Jing, in the Yin River flowing south from Mount Daoguo into the sea. The entry appears among the waterways and unusual animals of Mount Daoguo, whose slopes are said to contain metals, jade, rhinoceroses, si, and elephants.
Appearance
The ancient text gives Hu Jiao a fish-like body and a snake-like tail, and says that its voice resembles the call of mandarin ducks. It does not describe a tiger's head, claws, horns, colors, or fins. This artwork interprets the name and its water setting through a fierce tiger-faced, scaled creature with curling horns, golden limbs, a turquoise body, broad fins, clouds, mountains, and waves. These visible details are a modern artistic interpretation rather than a literal reconstruction of the source.
Legend
In the Yin River at Mount Daoguo, Hu Jiao is described as an animal that crosses familiar categories: fish in its body, snake in its tail, and a birdlike call. The Shan Hai Jing adds an old dietary claim that eating it would prevent swelling and cure hemorrhoids. This is an ancient mythic and medical belief, not modern health guidance or a reason to consume any animal.
