Lei Coloring Page

Lei is a mane-bearing, wildcat-like creature from the Shan Hai Jing, described as embodying both female and male qualities within a single being.

About Lei

Origin

Lei is recorded in the Southern Mountains section of the Shan Hai Jing. The text places it on Mount Danyuan, a steep mountain filled with water but without grasses or trees. Its short entry presents a strange feline creature whose body and qualities cross the ordinary categories of the natural world.

Appearance

The ancient text says only that Lei resembles a li, a wildcat-like animal, and has a mane or long hair. This artwork expands that spare description into a tall, long-tailed feline with tufted ears, layered fur, green ribbons, golden rings, and a cloud-patterned moon gate. Its orange, cream, and green palette is a modern artistic interpretation rather than a reconstruction of a fixed historical image.

Legend

According to the Shan Hai Jing, Lei lives on the difficult slopes of Mount Danyuan and is 'its own female and male,' a compact phrase traditionally understood as describing a creature that combines both sexes or can reproduce without a separate mate. The text also attributes an old piece of dietary magic to it: anyone who ate the creature would not feel jealousy. These are claims from mythology, not descriptions of a real animal or a modern belief.

Symbolism

Lei can be read as a figure of completeness, duality, and freedom from comparison. Its combined qualities blur the divisions that organize ordinary life, while the promise of freedom from jealousy turns the creature into an ancient imaginative answer to rivalry and possessiveness. As a coloring page, the flowing mane, ribbons, rings, clouds, and circular frame offer detailed areas for warm earth tones, jade greens, or a completely original palette.
