Li Li Coloring Page

Li Li is a pig-like creature from the Shan Hai Jing, described with spurs and a bark like a dog; its appearance foretells extensive earthwork.

About Li Li

Origin

Li Li is recorded in the Southern Mountains section of the Shan Hai Jing, in the opening entry of its second mountain sequence. The mountain overlooks surrounding waters and contains white jade and cinnabar. Within this landscape lives a strange beast whose appearance is treated as an omen of large-scale earthwork.

Appearance

The ancient text says Li Li resembles a pig and has ju, usually understood as spurs or projecting claws. Its voice sounds like a barking dog. This artwork expands that brief description into a tall, shaggy creature with a long porcine snout, rounded ears, a dark mane, powerful hind legs, and long black claws. The brown-and-cream coat, fruiting branches, enormous scale, mountain waterfalls, vehicle, and explorer are modern artistic additions rather than details preserved in the source.

Legend

Li Li appears in the Shan Hai Jing as an omen rather than the hero of a longer tale. Its dog-like bark announces a body that resembles a pig but carries unusual spurs. When the creature is seen, the text says that the surrounding district will undertake much tu gong—labor involving earth, such as digging, building, or other major ground works. The record presents this as ancient omen lore, not a modern prediction or a report of a real species.

Symbolism

Li Li can be read as a figure of upheaval, labor, and landscapes reshaped by human effort. Its burrowing associations and earthwork omen connect the creature with the tension between wild ground and construction. As a coloring page, its layered mane, claws, tree bark, leaves, berries, grasses, and rocks invite warm browns and creams, dark accents, or a completely original palette.
