Origin
Lushu is recorded in the Southern Mountains section of the Shan Hai Jing, on Mount Guiyang. The ancient text describes an extraordinary horse-like creature whose mixed features, unusual voice, and auspicious hide set it apart from ordinary animals. The Jin-dynasty scholar Guo Pu later celebrated the creature in his illustrated praise, while reports of sightings continued to circulate in later folklore, including stories from the late Ming period.
Appearance
The Shan Hai Jing says Lushu has the form of a horse, a white head, markings like a tiger, and a red tail. Its voice is described as sounding like a human chant or song. This artwork interprets those features through a pale coat, sweeping orange-and-red stripes, a fiery mane and curled tail, and a mountain landscape inspired by the creature's ancient home.
Legend
On Mount Guiyang, travelers were said to hear a strange song before seeing its source: a white-headed, tiger-striped horse with a crimson tail moving through the mountains. The ancient text says that wearing or carrying its hide was favorable for descendants, and the creature therefore became associated with a flourishing family line. Guo Pu's later praise remembers its horse-like substance, tiger pattern, raised head, ringing cry, and swift movement among the herd. Stories of rare sightings survived long after the early text, reinforcing Lushu's reputation as an elusive sign of blessing.
Symbolism
Lushu represents vitality, continuity, and the hope that future generations will prosper. Its body combines the grace of a horse with the visual power of tiger markings, while its song-like call gives it a presence that is both wild and almost human.
