What is Nine-Eared Hound?
Origin and Mythology
The Nine-Eared Hound is recorded in the Qing writer Qu Dajun's Guangdong Xinyu, in its account of the Thunder God. The tale follows a hunter from Leizhou whose dog's nine ears were believed to foretell the success of each hunt. It belongs to later Chinese folklore, not to the Shan Hai Jing.
In the Guangdong Xinyu, the hound's moving ears tell its owner how much game the next hunt may bring. One day all nine ears stir, and the dog circles a thorny patch until the hunter finds a great egg inside. A thunderstorm follows; when the egg opens, a boy appears with signs of thunder and Leizhou on his palms. The tale says he later became honored as a local Thunder God, giving the watchful dog a memorable place in the legend.
Appearance
The historical account gives the hound its defining feature: nine ears. Its cream fur, dark mane, spiral markings, colorful ears, long patterned tail, and moonlit mountain setting are MythColoring's artistic interpretation of that remarkable detail.
Symbolism
The Nine-Eared Hound represents attentiveness, companionship, and the surprise hidden in small signs. Its ears turn careful listening into a source of good fortune and discovery. Through MythColoring, this Chinese folklore hound becomes a coloring page for building a new legend one color at a time.
