What is Qinglong?
Origin and Mythology
Qinglong, the Azure Dragon, is one of the Four Symbols of Chinese astronomy and mythology. Its seven lunar mansions mark the eastern part of the sky. Chinese cosmology connects Qinglong with the east, spring, the blue-green color qing, and the Wood phase. It is a celestial guardian rather than a Shan Hai Jing creature.
Qinglong's story unfolds through sky watching rather than a single adventure. Ancient observers grouped seven lunar mansions in the east beneath the image of a dragon, and later ritual, art, and popular tradition treated it as a guardian of that direction. In this way, a pattern of stars became a powerful dragon moving through the clouds of the imagination.
Appearance
Qinglong is traditionally envisioned as a long, scaled dragon whose shape gathers a group of eastern constellations into one celestial guardian. This artwork's emerald scales, pale belly, turquoise and coral-red mane, golden horns, and flower ornament are MythColoring's artistic interpretation.
Symbolism
Qinglong represents renewal, growth, and the beginning of the seasonal cycle. Its place in the east connects it with spring and the rising of new life. Through MythColoring, its green scales and flowing form invite colorists to explore an old celestial symbol through their own creative choices.
