What is Ren Ma?
Origin and Mythology
Ren Ma appears in a description preserved in the Gujin Zhu (Ancient and Modern Notes), traditionally attributed to the Jin writer Cui Bao. The passage describes a water being with scales like a large carp, yet with hands, feet, ears, eyes, and a nose unlike those of an ordinary fish. It watches a person for a long time before slipping back beneath the water. This is a later traditional account, not a Shan Hai Jing entry.
Ren Ma's surviving account is a brief riverside encounter rather than a full heroic tale. Its long, quiet gaze and sudden return to the water turn an ordinary sighting into a small mystery. Later readers may imagine it as an elusive guardian of deep currents and hidden river paths; that expanded atmosphere is MythColoring's creative interpretation, not part of the original account.
Appearance
The traditional description focuses on large carp-like scales and humanlike hands, feet, ears, eyes, and nose. MythColoring's broad-faced, curling aquatic creature, golden mane, and tail fin are a modern artistic interpretation rather than a reconstruction of an ancient image.
Symbolism
Ren Ma represents curiosity and the mystery at the boundary between water and land. Its story invites us to consider how unfamiliar life can turn a familiar river into a place of wonder. Through MythColoring, this later Chinese legend becomes a coloring page where every version can carry its own river tale.
