About Taowu
Origin
Taowu is one of the Four Perils named in the Zuo Zhuan. There, the name is applied to an obstinate and destructive descendant of Zhuanxu, not first presented as a fully described animal. Later bestiaries and commentaries turned Taowu into a fierce beast, often tiger-like with a human face, prominent tusks, and a long tail. These traditions should be kept distinct.
Appearance
Later descriptions vary, but many give Taowu a tiger-like body, long dog-like hair, a human face, tiger feet, boar-like tusks, and an unusually long tail. This artwork's dark indigo body, blue-and-turquoise flame mane, crimson claws, red eyes, and long fangs are MythColoring's dramatic interpretation of those later beast traditions.
Legend
The earliest Four Perils account gives Taowu a moral story rather than a quest: it refuses instruction, rejects wise counsel, and disrupts the order of the world. The name was then used for one of the dangerous forces driven to the far borders in the legend of Shun. Later storytellers made that warning more vivid by sending a tiger-footed, tusked beast into the wild mountains, where its fierce refusal to yield became part of its legendary character.
Symbolism
Taowu represents the danger of stubbornness and the consequences of refusing to learn. Its later beast form makes an abstract warning visible through claws, tusks, and momentum.
