What is Zhuan Yu?
Origin and Mythology
Shan Hai Jing · Zhongshan Jing
The text places Zhuan Yu in the waters of Mount Gufeng and gives it a sound like a pig. It adds an omen: when the fish is seen, the realm will suffer a great drought. This is ancient mythic omen lore, not a scientific prediction or a description of a real animal.
Appearance
The Shan Hai Jing describes Zhuan Yu as resembling a fu, commonly understood as a crucian-carp-like fish, with pig-like hair. This coloring design turns that brief image into a graceful long-finned fish with layered, mane-like fins, scales, bubbles, water currents, rocks, and aquatic plants. The gold palette and flowing underwater scene are modern artistic interpretation rather than fixed details from the source.
Symbolism
Zhuan Yu links an underwater creature to the absence of water, turning a fish into a paradoxical sign of drought. Its mixed fish-and-pig traits make it feel uncanny even before the omen is revealed. As a coloring page, its scales, feather-like fins, water plants, bubbles, currents, and rocks invite gold, cream, brown, blue, or an entirely personal palette.
