What is Zhuque?

Origin and Mythology

Zhuque, the Vermilion Bird, is one of the Four Symbols of Chinese astronomy and mythology. Its seven lunar mansions mark the southern sky. Chinese cosmology connects Zhuque with the south, summer, the color red, and the Fire phase. Although both are magnificent birds, Zhuque is a celestial symbol and should not be confused with the Fenghuang.

Zhuque's legend begins with the southern sky. Ancient observers grouped seven lunar mansions into the image of a radiant bird, and later cosmology placed it among the four guardians of the directions. Its soaring form came to carry the warmth, brightness, and active energy of summer, rather than a single fixed adventure story.

Appearance

Zhuque is traditionally imagined as a red or fire-colored bird, giving the southern constellations a living guardian form. This artwork's layered crimson, orange, gold, teal, and deep-blue feathers, along with its clouds and mountain pavilions, are MythColoring's artistic interpretation.

Symbolism

Zhuque represents vitality, warmth, and the bright energy of summer. Its southern direction connects it with fire and the color red, making it a natural emblem of movement and light. Through MythColoring, the bird's sweeping wings and layered feathers become a rich field for color and imagination.
